The achievements cultivated through Kampo medicine education are utilized in the development of new medicines and health foods in the eco era.
In 1991, we established the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in order to make up for the lack of education related to herbal medicine education in Japan, because medical and pharmaceutical universities do not provide herbal medicine education. The university was established as a base for education and research related to Kampo medicine. In 1996, the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Japanese Department or School of Japan was added to the university, providing full-scale Kampo medicine education to medical professionals from Japan, including doctors and pharmacists.
The Institute of Oriental Medical Science Co., Ltd. is actively developing R&D businesses, such as searching for highly effective components within plants used in Kampo medicine which qualify as candidates for new medical products. We utilize the achievements and knowledge cultivated through the educational business at the “Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine School of Japan” to search for and examine save for human consumption and highly effective medicinal properties of herbs used in Kampo medicine.
In addition, we discovered various wonderful medicinal ingredients from our research on the plants. These results were first used in Japan to apply for a patent. After that we applied for global patents in Europe and the United States. We have for example acquired patents for the psychotropic effects (such as sedation, antidepressant action, etc.) of several kinds of effective active ingredients contained in the lotus germ embryo in Japan, the US and Europe.
Now, after over a quarter of a century passed since the establishment of the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine School of Japan, and based on its education and research results, we take full advantage of these resources to genuinely promote the idea of a “health business that helps people around the world.”
